"Dirty Furniture is a new independent biannual design magazine that uncovers the relationship between people and the things they live with. The magazine’s goal is to take a lateral approach to writing about design; we are as interested in what happens after an item leaves the showroom as in that which saw it arrive there. Dirty Furniture is conceived as a finite series of six, each taking a piece of furniture as its theme. Instead of dismissing furniture as a topic fit only for glossy lifestyle publications, Dirty Furniture will instead use it as a springboard to explore topics spanning politics, history, technology, psychology, manufacturing…and the plain weird. We start with Couch."

Issue 1/6 – Couch

"In our launch issue we look at the price tag of haunted furniture, the history of ‘comfort’ and the role of the sofa in sitcoms. We take the covers off Freud’s couch, peek into designers’ homes to see what sofa they live with, and scrutinise Tony Blair’s so-called ‘sofa politics’. Foam comes under the spotlight in a materials focus, manufacturing approaches are revealed and we interview a couchsurfer, an upholsterer and an antique dealer."
