  • “Tenugui” is Japanese traditional hand towel made of 100% cotton. This item is designed by Keisuke Serizawa, who is a representative dyeing craftsman of 20th Century in Japan. He developed his original “Kataezome” a stencil dyeing technique, and became Living National Treasure in 1956. His world of beauty is highly praised and his name is being known around the world. His works have strong character and creativity using dynamic composition and vivid colors, and they are continuously attracting people.

    The pattern consists of Japanese character “string”, and its font is called “cloth letter” which is his original, and looks as if the cloth is flapped. Not just for the use as a hand towel, it can also be hung on the wall with framing as an art piece.

    Keisuke Serizawa was born in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1895. He a Living National Treasure was a holder of “Kataezome”, an important intangible cultural heritage, and people around the world and in Japan appreciate him as a craftsman representing the 20th century. He had widely established new fields such as Kimono, bookbinding, calendar, signboard and lighting design.
