These canisters are made using a traditional technique used for centuries in Japan for tea canisters. No rust-proofing is done, and they are intended to age gracefully over time. The tin has a hand sanded finish. .The brass and copper will oxidise over time with touch and wear, getting a beautiful patina of age and use. Handling the cans with bare hands adds lustre and depth to the container. From the designer:
'A simple item that will someday become antique. To hold your interest, the shape is simple. Artisans make them by hand to use the minimum number of lines free of unevenness from any angle. The comfort of smooth opening and closing is realised through such meticulous work. Scuffing is also done by hand.
Simple things that will eventually become antiques. You start using something “for the time being” and find yourself using it all the time… Don’t you ever use a small container?
If so, you will grow to love them as you use them over and over again. In order to create such a can storage, we headed for an old-fashioned can factory in downtown Tokyo. Tinplate, brass, and copper. Each has its own fresh colour. The more five or ten years pass, the more the colours become more antique, and the more they become part of the scenery of daily life. The shape is simple so that you will never get tired of it. The craftsmen made it by hand.
The sanding is also done by hand. The matte finish is resistant to scratches and stains.
Coffee beans, tea, seasonings, stationery, etc. You can put whatever you want in it, because it can be placed anywhere.'
Care:Dry cloth wipe is recommended. If any moisture contacts remove all moisture with a dry cloth and air dry very well. As no rust-proofing chemicals are used on these cans, the joints will gradually rust over time, this is an intended element of the design of these wares, giving the patina of age.
Note for canister: whilst the inner lid does push out air upon closing, they are not hermetically sealed containers. For longer life, if you want, sometimes a dessicant (as you often find in spice packets) can be added to dry ingredients stored in these cans.
