Kawai Kanjiro: The Kawakatsu Collection in The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto

Kawai Kanjiro (1890–1966) was one of Japan’s preeminent modern potters and a key figure in the ‘mingei’ (Japanese folk art) and studio pottery movements. The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, is home to a group of his works, totalling some 425 items, that were originally part of the Kawakatsu Collection. In terms of both quality and quantity, these now form the consummate public collection of Kawai’s ceramics.
