Still Life

Ebony Truscott
Exhibition 18 May - 3 June 2012
Opening 18 May 6-8pm

Feather, Glass and Nitrile Glove, 2012, oil on canvas, 30 x 25cm

Mr Kitly presents new paintings of studio still life scenes by ex-Melbourne artist, Ebony Truscott. Her subject matter includes tools, containers, protective clothing and natural objects, which are scrutinized and painted with gentle accuracy. It's important for Truscott to use only non-photographic visual aids, especially when describing subtle tone and colour shifts. The objects are arranged casually but painted over many weeks using a very slow drying medium. Tellingly, they are non-perishable. There are depictions of glass and shells but they're teamed with USB cords and tangled masking tape. There's no lobster or unfurling lemon peel here, but no great breaking of the still life tradition either. It's classic themes; beauty in truthfulness and the passing of time are central to these works.
